I’m a Writer.
I’m also a Massage Therapist, a Husband, a Dad and a Musician – but everyday I write.
I write lists, check off tasks, write notes on all my Massage Therapy Sessions. I write.
But most importantly I write in my Journal everyday, no matter what.
No matter what? No matter what time it is, no matter how busy my day was, no matter how tired I am? I write in my Nightly Journal.
I sum up the big victories of the day, the steps I did to move my life ahead. The walk around the lake, the article I wrote, how many clients I saw.
Though I have other journals I carry in my car or take to workshops, even if I wrote in them that day I still sum up the day in my Night Journal.
Last night when I wrote in my night journal I was feeling pretty lousy about what I’d accomplished. I had thought I would get so much more done in the day than I had. As I was writing, something happened; as I looked over the words I had penned, I realized how much I had actually done. Not only that, but how many of the specific activities I DID DO that day were disciplines that I’ve been daily working on that have become so natural for me that they feel easy now. They have become part of my routine and now I accomplish them with ease.
Here in one sense I’m beating myself up because I feel like I’ve done nothing, then through the task of writing in my Night Journal I realize that I’m actually accomplishing alot and with ease.
It’s eye-openning how personal growth can just happen by taking a few tools that really make a difference in your productivity and your life, and do them daily.
I will never miss an entry in my Night Journal.
I would encourage anyone to start one. The dividends are huge and the pay-off is a daily reminder of all the important events, tasks and disciplines that moved you forward that day and every day for the rest of your life.
